This ruby and sapphire bar brooch, which comes with its original box, was created by renowned Art Deco era jeweler Ghiso.
Its platinum convex-shaped design is set with five calibrated rubies and six calibrated sapphires, which I believe to be synthetic. The design is completed by two square shapes at each shoulder, set with tiny rose-cut diamonds.
In the 1890s, a member of the Ghiso family emigrated from Italy to Buenos Aires and opened a jewellery salon which was an immediate success. At the beginning of the 20th century, two sons of the founder travelled to Paris and New York, establishing further locations for the firm. The company quickly gained a reputation for creating high-quality, avant-garde jewelry with a modernist aesthetic.
Ghiso Paris was particularly popular during the Art Deco period of the 1920s and 1930s, when their bold, geometric designs were in vogue. They created many pieces for the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris, which gave the Art Deco movement its name.
