These 19th Century earrings are made from ormulu, a gilding technique in which a finely ground, high-carat gold–mercury amalgam is fuzed to an object. Each earrings is set with a carved rams head of a dark brown material, likely jet or bog oak.
The design of these rams is very similar to animals found on Etruscan art, and these heads therefore became a popular motif in Neo-Etruscan jewellery, and were for instance also used by famous Neo-Etruscan jewelers Pio Castellani and Carlo Giuliano.
