This mechanical pencil is hallmarked for Birmingham and 1818, telling us exactly where and when it was made The bottom is set with a paste intaglio seal of Cupid riding a lion, which could be used to seal off a letter with hot wax. You can use the flower and fruit embossed rim to expose and use the pencil. The holder will fit any 8mm wide pencil, a diameter still used in modern pencils, making it easy to refill in the future.
