This 18k yellow gold necklace is made up of 16 kite-shaped onyx panels, all fitted in yellow gold settings.

The necklace carries the hallmark -depicting the papal crown and two crossed keys- of the Vatican Workshop, which was founded in 1727, originally to restore the existing mosaic artworks around St. Peter's Basilica. Over time, the workshop started creating jewellery for the growing group of wealthy Grand Tour visitors to Rome, who wanted to bring a souvenir back home from their travels.

The workshop specialised in micro mosaic jewels and their jewellery is considered rare and collectible today. I suspect this necklace was created for someone in mourning since it is made from onyx (the background for most micro mosaics) but lacks any further decoration or colour.
