This intricate bar brooch has been executed with an amazing high level of craftsmanship and eye for detail.
Its design is centred by an Old European-cut diamond of circa 0.15 carats, which ius set in a star-shaped setting. This setting is highlighted by an unusual, onyx inlay. The two 'shoulders' are open-worked, studded with numerous tiny rose-cut diamonds, and each is centred by a row of tiny natural seed pearls which have been treaded on a platinum chord and therefore appear to be floating in the design. The shoulders terminate in an elegant, lotus-inspired shape, set with tiny calibrated emeralds and rose-cut diamonds.
The design of this brooch is a lovely example of different fashions of its era. The delicate open-worked design with two rows of pearls that are seemingly flowing convey the romanticism popular during the Belle Epoque era (c. 1880 - 1915). The platinum front and use of both onyx and emerald as a 'clash' against the soft diamonds and pearls however, are clearly inspired by the Art Deco movement, which was very popular dring the 1920s and 1930s.
