This solid 14k yellow gold fob seal is set with a carnelian seal. The top has an unexpected secret, since it can be opened to reveal a letter 'M' or 'W' in gold thread on a red silk lining.
Fobs like these would have been worn on a watch chain of a Victorian gentleman. Officially, seals were used to sign letters, but evolved to show the wearer's personality or interests, and in this case, likely depicted either the owner's initial that of a loved one.
