This novelty stick pin depicts a Venetian masquerade mask, with the eyes set with rose-cut diamonds.
A masquerade ball is a formal event where the attendees wear costumes and/or masks to conceal their identity. Originating in Venice in the 15th Century as a part of the Carnival season, this pastime became very popular
in 17th- and 18th-Century Europe. They became so popular that jewellery depicting masks became a trend too, especially in the second half of the 18th Century.
