This elegant eternity ring is studded throughout with small, natural seed pearls, all set in individual, 'crimpled' settings. Interestingly, the back has three round spheres which have not been set with pearls. I am not sure if this was done to allow the ring to be sized down slightly if needed, or to make it more comfortable to wear, since there will now be no pearl rubbing against the back of your finger. A sweet little detail and mystery!
Pearls are one of the earliest minerals used for jewellery, and they have been found in tombs from many millennia ago. Since they are the only gems that need no facetting or polishing to be beautiful, they symbolize purity and perfection. Their rarity made them irresistible for many centuries, and for a long time, their value exceeded that of diamonds. The pearls that are used in this ring are known as seed pearls and are found in sweetwater variety mollusks, that can be found throughout Europe.
In the late 18th and early 19th Century they were especially popular, because their muted colour palette made them chic yet suitable for daytime wear (diamonds were considered a bit more garish and therefore only appropriate for nighttime). Pearls were also frequently used for mourning jewellery, and in that role represented tears.
