These 19th Century earrings are made of two malachite buttons, each centered by a star-shaped gold inlay, set with a small rose-cut diamonds.
Malachite is a vivid green mineral which is composed of alternating bands of light and dark green. Semi-precious gemstones such as agates, onyx and jaspers were much loved and appreciated in the second half of the 19th Century for their colour and unique patterns. These earrings would have certainly given any Victorian outfit a welcome pop of colour! Since these earrings were made in The Netherlands, it is likely that the malachite buttons were imported, most likely from Siberia, where it was found in abundance.
