This 14k yellow gold bar brooch is fitted with an onyx cameo, depicting the Ancient Greek philosopher Pythagoras.

Pythagoras of Samos (c. 570-495 BC) is said to be the first ancient man to call himself 'philosopher' or 'lover of wisdom'. His political, religious, and philosophical teachings inspired Plato, Aristotle and some of his theories are still being taught today.

He is credited for many mathematical and scientific discoveries, including the Pythagorean theorem that the squared hypotenuse length of a right-angled triangle is equal to the sum of the squares of its two other sides. He taught that the Earth is spherical, that all heavenly bodies did not move uniformly and that the morning and evening stars are the planet Venus.

All in all, Pythagoras is still seen as an important thinker from ancient times, and this brooch will therefore be a lovely token of appreciation for every lover of philosophy.
