These lovely rose gold hoops are typical Sicilian designs from the 18th Century. They are dubbed 'navicella', because the bottom half traditionally resembled the side of a galley, although this shape would become more abstract over time, as seen in these examples. Both sides of each earring are decorated with a white enamel underlayer, decorated with blue, pink, and green enamel. Each earring has three dangly rows of small natural seed pearls.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Size: 40 x 18 mm / 1.58 x 0.70 inches.
Weight: combined 5.11 grams.
Age: Late 18th Century, also known as the Georgian era, circa 1780s.
Material: These earrings have hallmarks that unfortunately are no longer readable. They have been tested as being 12k gold, an alloy that was used often in Sicily.
Condition: The earrings are in antique condition with wear, consistent with their age. The enamel has faded in places: one earring is particularly rubbed and faded, as can be seen in the pictures. I do work with an expert enamel restorer so could get a quote to have the damaged one restored upon purchase. Since the enamel is worn, but the pearls are still in great condition, I suspect that these were replaced at some time in the past.
