These rocky crystal earrings form an important part of English history.  The 17th Century was a tumultuous era, in which King Charles I was beheaded in 1649. After his execution, his close circle had locks of his hair fitted into pendants, buttons, and other jewels, set behind rock crystal panels.

This became a fashion trend, so similar jewels were made to show loyalty to the deceased king with other hair work. Later examples would often have reddish foil behind the rock crystals, or would contain the initials of the wearer in gold thread.

The size and shape of these settings tell us that these earrings were originally buttons or cufflinks, and were converted at a later date.
