This rare and unusual bracelet is made up of seven links, set with bog oak, carved in the shape of stylized fox heads. The almost abstract way in which these foxes are carved is clearly inspired by ancient Celtic examples.
Bog oak is essentially fossilized wood that was preserved in peat bogs. The 19th Century was an era in which unusual materials often became fashionable in jewellery and there was a short-lived fashion for the use of the material, especially in Irish jewels, around the 1860s.
