This 14k yellow gold watch chain would have been used in the 19th Century to attach a pocket watch to a waistcoat. The chain would prevent theft or loss, and was visible when worn, making it a little fashion accessory too.
This particular example has a fancy-link chain, with alterating gourmet-links and elongated bar links. It has a swivel hook on one end, and a large c-clasp on the other, making it very suitable to wear with your favourite charms.
