This incredible 18k yellow gold bracelet has a naughty edge! It is shaped like a laced-up garter with a scalloped edge and engraved detailing.
The bracelet opens and closes with a box clasp which has been fitted with a sliding mechanism, making it wearable in different sizes. It is also fitted with a safety chain, which prevents it from slipping off unnoticed.
Bangle bracelets in the shape of garters with laces were a surprising trend in mid-19th Century jewellery, fueled by the Victorian's love of naughtiness! A similar bracelet, but in silver, can be found in: Victorian Jewelry, Unexplored Treasures by R. Dawes and C. Davidov, 1991, page 47.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Size: Because of the sliding clasp, the inner circumference ranges from 15.5 to 17 cm or 6 3/8 inches. For reference: I have a 15.5 cm / 5 inches wrist, and the bracelet closes completely and sits snugly when I wear it.
Weight: 15.52 grams
Age: 19th Century, also known as the Victorian era, circa 1850s.
Material: Hallmarked with a French hallmark for 18k gold. It also carries the makers mark 'DINET' for Augustin Marie Dinet, who operated in Paris between 1848 and 1860.
Condition: In good antique condition with some signs of wear, consistent with its age. There was a small damage at one of the hinges which I had repaired and which cannot be seen anymore.
