This 18kt yellow gold ring is centered by a shell cameo which depicts a cherub that is making music by playing two flutes - traditionally known as ‘tuba’ - a way of making music that is depicted quite often on ancient Greek artifacts. The sides of the wide ring shank are decorated with an engraved abstract pattern.
A cameo is a method of carving a piece of material, often a mineral or shell, with a raised, positive relief image. Cameos will often depict gods or important people, but could also display animals, locations, or even whole historical scenes. They have been made for millennia and were for instance very popular in Ancient Greece. In the 19th Century, an increased interest in the ancient Romans created a trend for neo-classical jewellery that emulated ancient examples.
